Devolver's Emphasis on Innovative Titles Pays Off with Ball x Pit's Million-Seller Status

Kenny Sun's laid-back demeanor belies his incredible work ethic as a game developer. When informed that his recent release, Ball x Pit, has surpassed one million copies sold in its first month, Sun's response is characteristically low-key. "I'm not really thinking about it," he says, already focused on his next project. This unassuming attitude is familiar to Nigel Lowrie, co-founder and marketing lead of Devolver Digital, the game's publisher. "We've been sharing positive updates with Kenny about sales, reviews, and community engagement, but he just acknowledges them and gets back to work," Lowrie notes. The success of Ball x Pit is a testament to Devolver's approach of supporting innovative, small-scale titles. Development on the game began four years ago, initially as a weekend project inspired by a mobile game called PunBall. Sun's vision evolved over time, and after pitching the game to several publishers, Devolver finally signed on. Lowrie attributes the game's success to its engaging gameplay and respect for the player's time. "The game loop is familiar, but it's the pacing and rewards that set it apart," he explains. "Players are always getting something new, and the game doesn't waste their time with unnecessary grinding." Devolver's strategy of focusing on smaller, more agile titles has paid off, with Ball x Pit's sales exceeding expectations. The company's goal is to continue finding and supporting unique, creative games that might not fit the traditional mold. For Sun, the joy of game development lies in bringing his ideas to life. "When everything comes together, it's an amazing feeling," he says, already looking to his next project.
