Roblox Unveils Simplified IP Licensing System

Roblox, a gaming giant, has announced an ambitious goal to capture 10% of global gaming content revenue. To achieve this, the company is introducing a streamlined licensing platform, enabling users to create experiences based on various intellectual properties (IPs). The platform allows IP holders to easily integrate their properties into the Roblox system, with tools to customize licenses, set revenue shares, and define content standards. The initial lineup of IP holders includes Sega, Lionsgate, Netflix, and Kodansha, offering a range of properties for use within Roblox. The licensing process is designed to be simple, with IP holders able to set revenue shares between 0% and 95%. Creators can browse the license catalogue, pick an IP, and apply for a license, which is then reviewed by the license manager. If approved, the creator can access the IP immediately. Roblox's system aims to provide maximum creative expression, without requiring official assets. The company is working with IP holders to understand their needs and scale the platform, with plans to expand beyond the initial four partners. The goal is to create a thriving community of fan-created content, while also supporting IP holders in their efforts to protect their properties.
