Breaking Records: Indie Boxing Game Undisputed Sells 1 Million Copies
The indie boxing game Undisputed has achieved a major milestone, selling over 1 million units. Developed by Sheffield-based Steel City Interactive, a studio founded by brothers Ash, Asif, and Asad Habib, the game's success is a testament to the team's dedication and perseverance. Ash Habib, CEO of Steel City Interactive, recounts the studio's humble beginnings, saying, 'I've always been an avid gamer and a boxing fan. My brother suggested we work on a side project, and that's how it all started. We taught ourselves game development, and it just took off.' Despite having no prior experience in the video game industry, the brothers managed to secure licenses and partnerships with key players in the boxing world. Their passion and determination eventually won over investors, including London Venture Partners and Novator. The game's development was not without its challenges, particularly when it came to securing individual contracts with real fighters. However, Ash's efforts paid off, with Undisputed featuring 50% more real fighters than the previous boxing game. The boxing industry's initial skepticism eventually gave way to support, with the World Boxing Council and other organizations backing official tournaments and esports events. Ash notes, 'Esports was always part of our vision for the game. We partnered with the WBC to create an esports element where players can win a physical WBC belt.' The game's strong reception and sales have exceeded expectations, with the team focused on continuing to support and expand the game. While the studio's success may attract attention from larger players in the market, Ash remains committed to his core goal: creating an authentic boxing game that meets his vision.
