Roblox Introduces Mandatory Age Verification for Chat Access Worldwide
Following the introduction of voluntary age checks in November to restrict interactions between minors and adults, Roblox has now implemented a global age verification system for users to access chat. This new requirement applies to all regions where chat is available, including the US, in addition to the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands, where it was already mandatory. Roblox claims this move makes it the first large online gaming platform to require age checks for users of all ages to access chat, enhancing user safety and enabling age-appropriate communication. Once verified, users are assigned to one of six age groups and can only communicate with players in adjacent tiers by default. For instance, a 9-year-old can only chat with users aged 7-13, while a 16-year-old can interact with users between 13-20 years old. Roblox will continuously monitor user behavior to ensure they are in the correct age group and may require re-verification if necessary. Over 50% of daily active users in the initial countries have already completed the age verification process, which is private, fast, and secure. Although the age check is technically voluntary, it is required to access the chat function. According to Matt Kaufman, Roblox's chief safety officer, this proactive approach empowers users to create and connect safely. The platform has been enhancing its safety features over the past year, including adding a 'sensitive issues' content tag and introducing protections for under-13s, such as limiting their access to direct messaging and broadcasting capabilities.
