Larian Studios Opts Out of Using Generative AI for Concept Art in Upcoming Divinity Game

Larian Studios, the Belgian game development company behind the Divinity series, has announced that it will not utilize generative AI for creating concept art in its upcoming RPG. This decision was made to eliminate any potential controversy surrounding the artwork's origin. In a recent Reddit AMA session, CEO Swen Vincke stated that the company has chosen to refrain from using generative AI in the concept art development process to guarantee the authenticity of their art. Although the company had previously experimented with AI tools, it has since decided to remove them from the concept art process. Vincke clarified that while AI will not be used for concept art, the company still plans to explore its potential in speeding up development and refining ideas. The studio aims to use generative AI internally to improve the development cycle, but if it decides to use AI-generated creative assets in the game, it will ensure that the training data is owned by Larian and that the creators of the data have given their consent.
