Germany Sees 81% Surge in Game Companies Between 2018 and 2024

A recent report from the German Games Industry Association (Game) reveals a significant expansion of the German gaming sector between 2018 and 2024, marked by an 81% increase in the number of game companies. According to the report, the total number of game studios grew from 594 to 948 during this period. The introduction of a federal-level games funding program, which offers an annual €125 million in funding, is credited as a key factor in this growth. The majority of studios, at 87%, expect this funding to provide additional development support, while 67% anticipate increased turnover and 63% believe it will enhance competitiveness and job security. The report also highlights a 22% rise in company revenues, reaching €3.78 billion, and a 20% growth in the workforce to 14,800 employees. Furthermore, the proportion of women in the industry increased from 25% to 30%. Game managing director Felix Falk commented, "The sector's strong growth over the past few years demonstrates that, with the right conditions, the gaming industry can thrive. The Federal Games Funding Programme is yielding positive results for Germany, but we have yet to reach our full potential. A combination of games funding and tax incentives is necessary to tap into Germany's capabilities as a gaming hub." Falk added, "By meeting international standards, we can elevate our competitiveness and close the gap with leading gaming locations worldwide."
