Veteran BioWare Developer Mark Darrah Speaks Out in Defense of Anthem
Mark Darrah, a 24-year veteran of BioWare, has come to the defense of the studio's decision to venture into multiplayer gaming with Anthem. In a conversation with Destin Legarie, Darrah addressed recent comments suggesting that BioWare should have stuck to single-player RPGs, arguing that the studio has always been evolving. Darrah, who left BioWare in 2021, pointed out that the developer's history is marked by experimentation and growth, citing the transitions from 2D to 3D RPGs and from tactical to action RPGs. He noted that while Anthem may have been too ambitious, it was a natural step in the studio's evolution. Darrah also discussed the criticism directed at Electronic Arts, stating that while the publisher deserves some blame for Anthem's shortcomings, they are not entirely responsible. His comments echo those of John Warner, Anthem's director, who emphasized that the game was a continuation of BioWare's tradition of innovation and storytelling. Despite launching to mixed reviews and disappointing sales in 2019, Darrah remains proud of the game and the team's efforts to create a rich, immersive world.
