CD Projekt Takes Action Against Cyberpunk 2077 VR Mod with DMCA Notice
CD Projekt has filed a DMCA takedown notice against a VR mod of Cyberpunk 2077 created by modder LukeRoss. The modder revealed on Patreon that an 'ongoing legal exchange' culminated in the notice and the subsequent removal of the VR mod. LukeRoss criticized the move, stating that corporations prioritize profit while expecting modders to work for free. The mod in question utilizes the R.E.A.L. VR mod framework, which supports over 40 games, including Elden Ring and Marvel's Spider-Man. CD Projekt Red's VP of business development, Jan Rosner, confirmed the DMCA strike, citing the mod's paid availability as the reason. Rosner explained that CD Projekt's Fan Content Guidelines prohibit monetization of their IP without permission. The company offered LukeRoss the option to make the mod free with optional donations or remove it entirely. Rosner emphasized that CD Projekt values mods but requires permission for any profit-making endeavors using their IP. LukeRoss disputes CD Projekt's right to demand the software be free, arguing that it is not derivative work or fan content, as it supports multiple games with different engines and contains no code or assets from CD Projekt's IP.
