The Freeplay independent game festival, a staple of the Australian gaming scene since 2004, is on the verge of ceasing operations due to the unavailability of government funding. According to a statement released online, the festival's organizers have expressed disappointment over their inability to secure financial support from Creative Victoria's Creative Enterprises Fund. This setback has left the festival without the necessary resources to continue its activities. The organizers have pointed out that none of the 81 arts organizations funded by Creative Enterprises in the 2026-2029 funding round are games or interactive arts organizations. Despite this, the team remains committed to its original purpose of promoting the value of games as an artistic medium, which they believe is still highly relevant. With a 20-year history of supporting experimental and innovative game development, the festival is now seeking suggestions on how to utilize its remaining resources to benefit Australian game developers and exploring alternative funding options to continue its mission.
