Meta Quest Reaches New Heights in 2025 with Record-Breaking Usage
In 2025, Meta Quest achieved a new milestone with its highest usage ever, boasting over 100 titles that generated more than $1 million in gross revenue. At the GDC Festival of Gaming, Chris Pruett, Meta's director of games, discussed the company's continued investment in VR despite challenges such as studio closures and layoffs. He also reviewed the segment's performance in the previous year. For context, Meta's Reality Labs division reported $2.2 billion in revenue in 2025, with a $19.2 billion loss. In-app purchase revenue saw a growth of over 10%, primarily driven by premium app sales. The number of IAP apps earning $500,000 or more in revenue increased by 20%. Subscription revenue also experienced double-digit percentage growth, although it remains a relatively small part of the ecosystem and is mostly unrelated to video games. The Meta Horizon+ subscription service has surpassed one million subscribers and has paid out nearly $20 million to participating developers. According to Pruett, "Our investment in Meta Quest and games for Quest remains very high. We have a lot going on – new hardware, new audiences, new games. And though we have some welcome competition, Meta remains the biggest investor in VR in the world by a large margin." Pruett also addressed the removal of Horizon Worlds from the Meta Horizon store, stating that the decision was based on a hypothesis that it would increase device retention. After collecting data and experimenting with different landing pages, the company concluded that the hypothesis had not been proven. He emphasized that the cycle of experiment-learn-adjustment is typical for Meta, and the company is cautious not to make assumptions that cannot be proven. Pruett also highlighted the importance of listening to the developer community, whose feedback played a significant role in the decision-making process.
