Meta Announces Significant Job Cuts, Impacting Reality Labs and Other Divisions
Meta has undertaken a major restructuring effort, resulting in the elimination of approximately 700 positions across various departments, including the Reality Labs division. According to a report by The New York Times, the layoffs have also affected roles in recruitment, sales, operations, and Facebook, with the company currently employing around 78,000 people. A Meta spokesperson noted that the company regularly reviews and adjusts its teams to ensure they are well-positioned to achieve their objectives, and efforts are being made to find alternative opportunities for impacted employees. Bloomberg reports that the job cuts may affect workers in the US and other markets, with most affected employees having been notified on March 25. This move follows an earlier decision by Meta to reduce its Reality Labs workforce by 10%, resulting in the closure of three VR studios: Twisted Pixel Games, Sanzaru Games, and Armature Studio. The VR and AR division currently employs around 15,000 staff. During the recent GDC Festival of Gaming, Meta's director of games, Chris Pruett, announced that Meta Quest usage had reached an all-time high in 2025, with over 100 titles generating more than $1 million in gross revenue. Pruett also discussed the planned removal of the Horizon Worlds metaverse from the Meta Horizon Store, scheduled for June, stating that the company's approach involves experimentation, learning, and adjustment. Meta's Reality Labs division reported $2.2 billion in revenue last year, while incurring a loss of $19.2 billion.
