Why Amplitude Studios Left Sega

Amplitude Studios, based in Paris, made a name for itself in 2012 with the release of Endless Space, a 4X turn-based strategy game. The studio went on to create several sequels and spin-offs, including Endless Legend and Dungeon of the Endless in 2014, and Endless Space 2 in 2017. In 2016, Sega acquired Amplitude, providing the studio with more resources to create games on par with those developed by Wargaming, Paradox, and 2K. However, in 2024, Amplitude parted ways with Sega, following the Japanese publisher's sale of Relic Entertainment. De Waubert de Genlis discussed the reasons behind the departure, stating that Amplitude's focus on PC games and lack of core Japanese IP made it difficult for the studio to fit into Sega's overall strategy. He also noted that the decision to leave was initiated by him, and it took nearly a year and a half to finalize the details, including securing financing and negotiating the terms of the departure. De Waubert de Genlis emphasized the importance of independence, citing the ability to make quicker decisions and maintain a motivated team as key benefits. He also highlighted the need to optimize work habits and create high-quality games with smaller budgets, a challenge that many studios face in the current gaming landscape. The interview provided insight into the evolution of Amplitude Studios and its goals for the future, including the development of new games and the maintenance of its independence.
