Roblox Unveils Simplified IP Licensing System
Roblox has announced an ambitious goal to capture 10% of the global gaming content revenue, with a key component being the ability for users to create experiences based on various intellectual properties. To achieve this, Roblox has introduced a streamlined licensing platform that enables outside firms to seamlessly integrate their IPs into the Roblox system. The platform allows IP holders to customize a template license, set revenue share rates, and define eligibility criteria. The initial lineup of IP holders includes Sega, Lionsgate, Netflix, and Kodansha, offering a limited number of properties for use within Roblox. The platform provides tools for IP holders to monitor and moderate the use of their IP, including content standards and takedown notices. Creators can browse the license catalog, read the terms, and accept them to gain access to the IP. The license manager reviews the project and can approve or reject it, with the option to defer monetization. The system is designed to be automated, with AI technology used to search for and flag IP use. Roblox aims to expand the program to more companies, with the goal of allowing any eligible IP holder to sign up in the future.
