UKIE Evaluates the Impact of the Government's Creative Industries Sector Plan on the UK Gaming Industry
Logie MacDonald, communications manager at UKIE, expressed enthusiasm about the UK government's Creative Industries Sector Plan, stating that the level of support is unprecedented. The plan addresses several of UKIE's proposals, marking a significant shift in the government's approach to the gaming industry. The sector is now on an equal footing with other creative industries, such as film and TV. The plan includes a £30 million Games Growth Package, which will be allocated over three years, with a portion going to the UK Games Fund and Games London. The funding is expected to boost the industry, particularly for small companies and students looking to start their first gaming company. However, UKIE notes that there is still room for improvement, particularly regarding tax breaks and skills shortages. The government's maintenance of the current Video Game Expenditure Credit is seen as a positive step, but UKIE will continue to push for an increased tax relief rate. The formation of the UK Video Games Council and the UK Games Skills Network are also expected to support the growth of the sector. Overall, the plan is a step in the right direction, but ongoing efforts are needed to address the industry's challenges and ensure its continued growth.
