GCL's Ambition: Evolving from Distributor to Developer of Asian IPs
GCL, a prominent digital entertainment company in Asia, has been publishing and distributing major titles such as Black Myth Wukong, Stalker 2, and Atomic Heart. With its headquarters in Singapore and teams in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China, the company is also building strong relationships in Japan and Korea. GCL's publishing arm, 4Divinity, co-publishes AAA titles in Asian territories, including Stalker 2 in Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The company has worked with notable publishers such as Plaion, Sega, and Warner Bros. on various titles. According to Keith Liu, chief marketing officer and head of publishing, GCL's ambition is to create impactful and significant games that people will remember, with a focus on bringing Asian culture to the global gaming industry. Liu highlights the importance of understanding the fundamentals of the market and creating fresh experiences that gamers are looking for. In terms of the Southeast Asian market, Liu notes that retail remains a significant part of the gaming landscape, with physical sales still dominating the console market. However, digital sales are growing, particularly for PC and mobile games. The company is looking to tap into the capital market to fund its game development ambitions and create its own IPs, inspired by the success of titles like Black Myth: Wukong.
