Paradox Interactive: Navigating Delays, Development Shifts, and Cancellations
Paradox Interactive has faced significant challenges over the past year, including multiple delays and the cancellation of Life by You. The company's highly anticipated Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 changed development studios in September 2023, moving from Hardsuit Labs to The Chinese Room. A month later, Paradox wrote down the development costs of The Lamplighters League and announced layoffs at Harebrained Schemes, followed by the split between the two companies. In 2024, Paradox cancelled Life by You and closed its developer, Paradox Tectonic, resulting in a 90% drop in profits. The company also delayed Cities Skylines 2 on consoles and postponed Prison Architect 2 indefinitely. Deputy CEO Mattias Lilja attributes the company's struggles to a combination of factors, including poor project management and a lack of understanding of the company's core strengths. "We need to focus on what we know and do it well," he says. "If we're going to start something new, it needs to be within our circle of competence." Lilja emphasizes the importance of careful risk assessment and financial planning when taking on new projects. He also highlights the need for the company to understand its fans and deliver games that meet their expectations. Paradox is taking steps to refocus on its core business and prioritize quality over quantity. The company is also investing in its indie publishing efforts, which have shown promise with successful titles like Mechabellum. Lilja believes that 2025 will be a crucial year for Paradox, with several projects in the pipeline and a renewed focus on the company's core values. "We're trying to get back to our roots and do what we do best," he says. "It's going to take time, but I'm confident that we can turn things around and deliver great games to our fans."
