Team17 Emphasizes Understanding Player Needs for Successful Game Development
During his talk at Devcom, Jasper Barnes, the head of game scouting at Team17, discussed the key factors that indie publishers consider when deciding which games to invest in. Barnes highlighted the significance of understanding what drives players to engage with a game and how developers can leverage this knowledge to create a standout title. For Barnes, the primary consideration is whether a game can evoke an emotional response in players. He believes that this can be achieved by tapping into nostalgia, drawing inspiration from previous titles or cultural phenomena, or creating a unique experience that resonates with players. Barnes used a personal example of a game concept he would like to see developed, emphasizing that the core idea doesn't have to be based on a specific genre or trope. Instead, it can be centered around a particular moment, nostalgia, or reference that excites players. A strong, original concept can lead to replayability, which Barnes considers crucial in today's competitive market. He noted that capturing players' attention for an extended period is increasingly challenging, and developers must demonstrate an understanding of what players enjoy to keep them engaged. Barnes acknowledged that replayability can be difficult to determine, but it is a top consideration for publishers when evaluating potential investments. At Team17, the company receives around 4,000 pitches annually, and being able to play a demo helps streamline the selection process. Barnes emphasized the importance of a subconscious desire to return to a game, which is a key indicator of a game's potential for success. He also stressed the value of a strong partnership between developers and publishers, highlighting the need for open communication, enthusiasm, and a willingness to incorporate feedback. By working together and sharing a vision, developers and publishers can create something special and build a lasting relationship.
