PS5 Reaches 4 Million Sales Milestone in the UK, 31 Weeks Behind PS4
According to GfK data, the PlayStation 5 has now sold over four million units in the UK, marking a significant milestone. This achievement makes the PS5 the ninth console to reach this milestone in the UK, although it took 31 weeks longer than its predecessor, the PlayStation 4. In terms of sales speed, the PS5 is the fifth-fastest console in the UK, but it has a notably higher price point compared to its competitors. For example, the PlayStation 1, which is the fourth-fastest selling console, saw its price drop to £129 after 76 weeks and was under £100 by the time it reached four million sales. In terms of revenue, the PS5 has generated over £1.85 billion, surpassing the PS4's revenue of £1.26 billion at the same sales point. The Nintendo Wii remains the fastest console to reach four million sales, with a launch price of £180 and a price of £140 after three years. The PS2 was the second-fastest, launching at £299 and dropping to £199 after 49 weeks, with an average price of £165 by the time it reached four million units. The PS4, which is the third-fastest console to reach four million units, had a higher price point but was still below £300 by the time it reached this milestone. GfK games boss Dorian Bloch notes, "The era of consoles being sold at impulse-buy prices is over. Consoles like the Wii, PS1, PS2, and Xbox 360 all had relatively low average selling prices by the time they reached 4 million units, either through launch pricing or significant price reductions over time."
