Hilmar Pétursson: Unlocking CCP Technology to Ensure Eve Online's Enduring Legacy
CCP Games, the Icelandic developer of the long-running MMO Eve Online, is preparing to share its proprietary technology with the world. The company plans to make its Carbon Development Platform, which includes the Carbon Engine, an open source property, allowing other developers to access the same tools that power Eve Online. According to CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, this move is driven by a desire to leave a lasting legacy. He notes that companies in the gaming industry often have short lifespans, and that CCP, at 27 years old, is already considered an old company. Pétursson believes that by sharing its technology, CCP can increase the chances of Eve Online enduring for generations to come. He cites the example of Linux, an open source operating system that has become ubiquitous, and notes that open sourcing code makes it more robust and increases its longevity. Pétursson also expects that the open sourcing of the Carbon Development Platform will lead to new and innovative uses of the technology, as developers and fans are able to access and modify the code. He notes that CCP is already using Unreal Engine for its new first-person shooter, Eve Vanguard, but that the Carbon platform is better suited for large-scale spaceship simulations. The Carbon Development Platform will also include elements of blockchain technology, which Pétursson believes can be used to build unique and innovative projects. However, he acknowledges that there is still skepticism around blockchain technology and emphasizes that its use is entirely optional. Pétursson also discusses the importance of community in Eve Online, noting that the game's design has created a sense of consequence and investment among players. He believes that this has led to the formation of strong, resilient communities, and that the game has become a platform for players to form lasting relationships. However, he also notes that the developer's role is limited, and that ultimately, it is up to the players to create their own experiences and connections within the game.
