Introducing Indie Pass: A $6.99 Monthly Subscription for Independent Games
Indie.io, an independent game publisher, is set to launch Indie Pass, a monthly subscription service providing access to a diverse library of indie games for $6.99. The platform, scheduled to go live on April 13, will initially feature around 70 titles, including games from Indie.io's existing catalog, such as Echoes of the Plum Grove and the Dark Deity series. The company is also working to partner with other developers, who will earn revenue based on player engagement. According to Director of Growth Jess Mitchell, the primary benefit for participating developers is increased discoverability for their titles and a means to generate revenue from their back catalog. For users, Indie Pass offers a curated selection of 'distinctly indie' games that changes monthly, along with a recommendation system that tracks their engagement to suggest new titles. The platform is an extension of Indie.io's publishing label, which comprises over 200 games across multiple platforms, and its community platform wiki.gg, which boasts 10 million monthly active users. Mitchell emphasizes that the company is committed to helping developers succeed, and Indie Pass is a solution designed to address the challenge of discoverability in a crowded gaming landscape. The service will pay developers based on a revenue-sharing model, with the amount earned by each developer determined by how much time users spend playing their game. Mitchell believes that Indie Pass will not harm game sales, instead, it will have a positive effect, similar to other subscription services. The platform's curation will focus on providing a unique experience for users, with games that may not be newly released but offer a distinct play style or narrative experience. New games will be added regularly to the platform, with no exclusivity requirements, allowing studios to launch their games on Indie Pass and other storefronts simultaneously. Mitchell is enthusiastic about the potential for Indie Pass to breathe new life into older games, making them discoverable again for players. The platform will use a recommendation system similar to Steam's algorithm, taking into account player preferences, such as gameplay style and controller type, to suggest relevant games. By measuring player session time, Indie Pass will also gain insights into user behavior, informing its curation and game selection. Ultimately, the goal is to make Indie Pass a go-to destination for players looking for new and exciting indie games, with a focus on growing the player base and reacting to user feedback.
