Roblox Tech Chief Discusses AI Integration

The ninth annual Roblox Developers Conference is underway in San Francisco, where the company has unveiled several key announcements, including the imminent launch of Roblox on PlayStation and its full release on Meta Quest. Additionally, Roblox has introduced Roblox Connect, a 3D communication experience, and Roblox Assistant, a conversational AI tool designed to aid creators on the platform. In a pre-show briefing, CTO Daniel Sturman highlighted the potential of Roblox Assistant to accelerate the creative process for both new and experienced creators. The tool can provide instructions on importing meshes, creating scenes, and even add behavior to objects. To achieve this, Roblox is leveraging open-source LLMs and training them on its own data, with an opt-in model for creators. Sturman emphasized the importance of ensuring that AI-generated content does not undermine the value of existing creators' work, citing the need for a healthy economy that rewards creativity and innovation. He also discussed the challenges of moderating AI-generated content, noting that while AI brings new opportunities for improvement, it also presents unique challenges. Roblox is exploring solutions, including real-time voice moderation and economic tools to prevent a race-to-the-bottom economy. Other announcements from the conference include the introduction of new tools for developers to create subscriptions and an update to the Creator Marketplace, allowing creators to keep 100% of their sales, minus taxes and processing fees.
