Key Strategies for Building a Safe and Inclusive Game Development Studio
During her presentation at Develop Brighton, Code Coven co-CEO Cinzia Musio pushed for enhanced support of marginalized groups within the gaming industry. Her talk, titled 'Supporting Marginalized Genders in Games: Where is the Accountability?,' examined studio-led initiatives focused on promoting accountability, diversity, and inclusion. Musio also unveiled Code Coven's new Evolve program, a studio accreditation initiative aimed at establishing a standard for accountability and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the gaming industry. East Side Games, a Vancouver-based studio, became the first to receive Evolve accreditation. Musio noted that the journey to achieving equity, diversity, and inclusion is often paved with challenging conversations and uncomfortable decisions. She stressed that creating systemic change is crucial, even if it requires confronting and dismantling existing privilege systems. According to Musio, while representation in the industry has seen marginal improvement, with a 4% increase in marginalized individuals working in the industry between 2020 and 2022, systemic issues persist, particularly in leadership roles. The lack of diversity at the Summer Game Fest highlighted the industry's tendency to treat diversity and inclusion as a checkbox exercise, rather than a meaningful commitment. Musio emphasized that everyone deserves a safe environment, regardless of their background, and that marginalized individuals should not be left behind. She encouraged studio leaders to prioritize creating a safe and inclusive work environment, where individuals can voice concerns without fear of retaliation. This, Musio argued, is not only a moral obligation but also a legal requirement. To achieve this, Musio recommended that studios implement practical tools, such as fostering a safe environment, eliminating toxic individuals, and making tough decisions. She also suggested that studios prioritize inclusive benefits, reporting processes, and employee feedback to ensure a secure and productive workplace. Musio urged company leaders to investigate and address barriers to progression, particularly for marginalized individuals, and to distribute opportunities for growth fairly. By doing so, studios can become more open, innovative, and attractive to top talent. Ultimately, Musio encouraged the gaming industry to take its unique position seriously, using its platform to create empathy and understanding for marginalized individuals, and to drive positive change in society.
