Xbox Proves Its Strength with Impressive Showcase | Opinion
Prior to the latest Xbox showcase, Phil Spencer addressed the audience, discussing his emotional response to the underwhelming performance of Bethesda's Redfall and his frustration with the console industry. In hindsight, Spencer's apology seems unwarranted, and the widespread criticism of Xbox's recent performance appears exaggerated and premature. Although Redfall was disappointing, it does not accurately represent Xbox's overall output. The game was released shortly after the exceptional Hi-Fi Rush and Pentiment, demonstrating Xbox's teams' ability to deliver high-quality games. Despite this, sentiment has been low due to a combination of factors, including a disappointing game launch, the CMA's rejection of the Activision Blizzard deal, and mixed financial results. However, these individual setbacks do not necessarily constitute a crisis. Xbox's struggles with its release slate can be attributed to unfortunate circumstances, such as the acquisition of studios that were already working on multi-platform games or committed to PS5 exclusives. The pandemic also hindered development and ideation, particularly for studios like Playground Games, Rare, and The Initiative, which were expanding their AAA teams. As Xbox entered its not-E3 showcase, the company was under pressure to deliver. Fortunately, the event showcased numerous promising projects, and fans are finally close to experiencing these games. While some may criticize the lack of gameplay footage and the abundance of fantasy action games, the upcoming releases of Starfield and Forza Motorsport this year are promising. Moreover, exclusive games from notable studios like Obsidian, Playground Games, and Ninja Theory were showcased, including Avowed, Fable, and Hellblade, which garnered strong reactions from the audience. The showcase featured a wide range of big titles, including new IP and surprise announcements, such as the collaboration between Rare and LucasArts on a Sea of Thieves/Monkey Island crossover. With Perfect Dark and Everwild still in development, Xbox has demonstrated its commitment to delivering high-quality games. Xbox has set the stage for the next 18 months, and its competitors, PlayStation and Nintendo, are now aware of what they are up against. While there is still much to be seen, Xbox's showcase has proven that the best is yet to come. Until these games are released, their potential remains unrealized. Xbox must now follow through on its promises, starting with the highly anticipated Starfield in September. After a tumultuous few months, Xbox has regained its footing, and the future looks promising.
