Mental Health Support in the Gaming Industry
Warning: this article discusses sensitive topics such as suicide, overdose, and mental health issues. Mental health first aid is a vital concept that involves providing care and support to individuals experiencing mental health crises. However, it is often overlooked in basic first aid training. To address this gap, specialized mental health first aid (MHFA) courses are available. MHFA involves providing initial support and guidance to individuals developing mental health problems or experiencing crises. This may include noticing changes in behavior, offering conversations to provide help, and facilitating access to professional assistance. In a work setting, MHFA may involve empowering employees to take time off for mental health, navigating benefits and support systems, and following up to ensure they receive necessary help. Crisis situations, such as substance overdoses or suicidal thoughts, require immediate intervention and may involve contacting emergency services. Given the significant amount of time spent at work, it is likely that mental health issues will arise in the workplace. In Canada, one in five people experience mental health problems each year, and this statistic may be even higher following the COVID-19 pandemic. Prolonged stress, commonly experienced in the gaming industry, can increase the risk of mental health problems. Game developers often work long hours, face tight deadlines, and experience pressure from various stakeholders, which can negatively impact their mental health. To positively impact employee mental health, organizations can take several steps: - Provide training: Invest in MHFA training for employees, particularly those in leadership positions or who interact with colleagues regularly. - Offer benefits: Ensure employees have access to mental health-related insurance coverage, including prescription drug coverage and overall health and wellness services. - Plan effectively: Avoid requiring employees to work excessive overtime, and incorporate self-care and stress management into project planning. - Develop policies: Include mental health-related issues in sick leave policies, avoid enforcing crunch time, and establish clear communication guidelines for discussing mental health. Employees can also take steps to support their mental health, such as taking MHFA training, seeking therapy or counseling, and utilizing available resources like crisis lines. Ultimately, studios and leadership can have a positive impact on employee mental health by engaging with them, investing in solutions and support, and fostering a safe and welcoming work environment. If changes are not implemented, employees can band together to demand support and seek guidance from union organizers or other resources.
