UK Box Office: Star Wars Franchise Ranks Sixth in Video Game Sales
With the imminent release of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, marking the 119th Star Wars video game since 1993, the franchise continues to demonstrate its enduring popularity. This averages out to nearly four Star Wars games per year over the past three decades, as noted by Dorian Bloch, GfK's games lead. This surpasses other notable IPs, including Mario and The Sims, in terms of the sheer number of games produced. According to combined data from GfK, Gallup, and Chart-Track, physical Star Wars video games have generated £492 million in sales since 1995, securing its position as the sixth largest video game IP in the UK. Notably, this figure exceeds Pokémon's sales but falls behind the LEGO franchise, with LEGO Star Wars games being counted under both categories. The most successful Star Wars game launch occurred in 2015 with EA's release of Star Wars Battlefront for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, outselling the previous best-seller, The Force Unleashed, by more than double. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor aims to surpass its predecessor, Fallen Order, which currently holds sixth place and likely would have ranked within the top five if digital sales were included. Although Star Wars game releases have become less frequent in recent years, they continue to make a significant impact upon launch. The LEGO Star Wars game released last year achieved the fourth largest Star Wars launch of all time and was the most successful within the LEGO Star Wars sub-series. Among EA's recent Star Wars titles since 2015, only Star Wars Squadrons failed to break into the top ten. Several Star Wars games have gradually risen through the charts over time, such as LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga and the original Star Wars: Battlefront II, which did not initially achieve high sales but eventually found a substantial audience. In fact, the three best-selling LEGO Star Wars games did not feature in the list of biggest launches. Out of 107 games, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order ranks eighth among the most successful Star Wars games of all time, setting a high standard for EA's upcoming release.
