Discover CliCli: The Next Generation of User-Generated Gaming Content
The line between game developers and enthusiasts has been blurred for as long as PC games have existed. Players have been creating their own content since the dawn of computer games, with many mods and game modes being developed from existing titles. However, this process used to require extensive technical knowledge. Recently, new platforms have emerged, making it easier for players to create their own games. Notable examples include Minecraft and Roblox, which are primarily focused on user-generated content. CliCli, a Singapore-based platform, is the latest entrant in this space. Backed by games multinational NetEase, CliCli launched its alpha version in July 2022. According to Kun Li, Head of Operations, "Our philosophy revolves around simplifying game creation. With years of experience in the gaming industry, our team appreciates the contributions of creators. We recognize the need for advanced technology and efficient tools to bring creators' ideas to life easily." Unlike other new PC platforms that compete with Steam, CliCli is more similar to Roblox. Li explains, "Our vision is not limited to creating a conventional game store. Instead, we aim to develop a thriving user-generated content gaming community. Existing platforms are already established in terms of commercialization, and game development requires significant investment. CliCli provides a comprehensive game creation and distribution platform, allowing creators to produce and distribute games effortlessly." CliCli's focus on user-generated content is driven by the desire to make game development accessible to everyone. Li states, "Our team members have extensive experience in leading game companies and are passionate about game design. We believe everyone should have the opportunity to experience the joy of creating games. For those working in large game corporations, developing their own games can be a lengthy and arduous process. We want to provide a platform where creators can showcase their work to their audience." CliCli's creator base is a global community, ranging from industry professionals to novices with no experience. Li notes, "They all share a passion for game development and have the skills to create unique and engaging gameplay. CliCli provides built-in, user-friendly features for individuals with limited technical skills or game development experience. Our platform allows creators to control Events, Conditions, and Actions (ECA) to realize their game ideas efficiently." CliCli also offers thousands of assets, including models, particle effects, decorations, and music, which users can employ free of charge and without risk. Li states, "Our expanding resource library lowers creators' barrier to entry and reduces the risk of IP infringement. We will launch a fair trading marketplace for game artists to build value through their own works." Currently in alpha, CliCli offers a 70/30 revenue split, with plans to innovate its revenue-sharing model in the future. Li explains, "We adopt a creator-favored revenue share model. We evaluate our content ecosystem and may introduce a more comprehensive, tiered-based revenue-sharing model in the future." CliCli has evolved significantly since its launch, with feedback from creators helping to refine and improve the platform. Li says, "We are grateful for the ongoing support and feedback from our community. Their input enabled us to release the CliCli editor Alpha 2.0, which includes new features such as ECA profiling, a particle editor, and LUA plugin extension." CliCli is not only building a platform but also creating games that users can play and add to. The first game, Game of Rollink, is a PvP competitive card game with elements of the auto-battler genre. Li notes, "We are committed to supporting the development of various UGC games that appeal to a broad range of audiences. Game of Rollink is an example of what creators using CliCli can achieve, and we hope it will lead to increased activity and exposure for other games." The CliCli team can be met at the GDC Expo, Booth #S1332, from March 22nd-24th, 10AM-6PM (PST). Interested parties can email official@theclicli.com to arrange an appointment.
