Former Criterion Leaders Launch New AAA Game Studio, Fuse Games

A group of former Criterion leaders, who left the Need for Speed developer in December, have reunited to form a new AAA game studio called Fuse Games. The studio is led by Matt Webster, a veteran of Electronic Arts, and is based in Guildford. The team is currently composed of 17 people and plans to expand, with a focus on creating a hybrid work environment. Their first game will be a AAA console and PC release, but the genre has not been disclosed. Webster stated that the team has experience in various genres, including arcade racers, open-world racers, and VR, and they will choose a genre to lead once they have selected it. The team has been fortunate enough to work on a wide range of games and has experience with small and large development teams. Webster, who joined EA at the age of 18 and spent 32 years at the company, decided to leave to explore new opportunities. He is excited to create a new studio with a clear vision and values, including a love for games, creative collaboration, and a sense of urgency. The studio aims to make games quickly and responsibly, without crunch, and to create a space where people can feel safe and included. Webster believes that the key to success lies in creating an environment where people can be their authentic selves and feel comfortable sharing their work. The studio has secured funding, although the investment partner has not been disclosed. Fuse Games is looking to make a name for itself in the gaming industry, with a focus on creating high-quality games and attracting diverse talent. Webster is confident that the studio will be able to make a significant impact in the industry and is excited to see what the future holds.
