PS5 Surpasses Nintendo Switch as 2022's Top-Selling Console in the UK

The UK witnessed a remarkable surge in PS5 sales during August, with a 56% increase in stock levels compared to July, according to GfK data. This significant boost has propelled the PS5 to the top of the UK console sales charts for the year so far, overtaking the Nintendo Switch. Meanwhile, Nintendo's hybrid console also saw a modest 4% sales increase in August. Xbox Series S and X sales remained steady, securing third place overall, with approximately 125,000 consoles sold in the UK during August, representing a 20% rise from the previous month. However, the total number of consoles sold in the UK this year stands at just under 880,000, marking a substantial 36% decline compared to the first eight months of 2021. In terms of software sales, the UK saw 1.67 million games sold in August, a 10% decrease from the same period last year and a 3% drop from July, based on digital and physical data from GSD. The best-selling game of the month was Saints Row, with Deep Silver's title dominating digital sales and securing the second spot in physical retail releases, behind Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Notably, despite having a smaller install base, the open-world reboot sold 21% more copies on Xbox platforms. Following Saints Row, the next major new release was the PC version of Spider-Man Remastered, which has become Sony's fastest-selling PC game to date. Sega's Two Point Campus closely followed at number eight. It's worth noting that this data excludes sales of games bundled with consoles, such as the Horizon Forbidden West PS5 console bundle. In the accessories sector, 547,122 add-on products were sold in August, a slight 0.7% decrease from July and a 14.5% decline from August last year, according to GfK data. PlayStation's DualSense controllers continue to perform well, with the White and Black versions occupying the top two spots. The Robot White Xbox Wireless Controller has entered the chart at number three, while the Carbon Black version jumped 132 places to number eight, both having previously faced supply issues. The GSD digital data encompasses games from participating companies sold via Steam, Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and Nintendo Eshop, with major companies like Activision Blizzard, Bandai Namco, and Capcom contributing, although Nintendo and 505 Games are notable exceptions.
