Sony Set to Acquire Cinemersive Labs, Enhancing AI and Visual Computing Capabilities
Sony has announced its intention to acquire Cinemersive Labs, a UK-based company specializing in machine learning and computer vision, particularly in immersive 3D photography and video for virtual and augmented reality applications. This acquisition will integrate Cinemersive Labs into Sony Interactive Entertainment's Visual Computing Group, a division focused on research and engineering. The move is aimed at bolstering Sony's efforts in advancing the state of the art in visual computing within the gaming industry, including the application of machine learning to enhance gameplay visuals and rendering techniques. The Visual Computing Group was established in 2024, following the merger with AI company iSize and components of the SIE Game Platform Artificial Intelligence group. It comprises a significant team of R&D engineers with expertise in neural networks, video coding, quality assessment, generative models, game rendering, and high-performance computing. Earlier in the year, Sony filed a patent for an AI system designed to assist players by generating a 'ghost player' that interacts with the environment, similar to a co-op partner, to demonstrate in-game solutions. Other patented technologies include predictive player movement to reduce lag, detection of player frustration through audio or controller inputs, and impersonation of players to identify online cheating.
