Netflix Introduces App for Kids' Games

As part of its revamped gaming strategy, Netflix has launched a standalone app for kids' games. The Netflix Playground app features a range of exclusive titles from popular franchises like Peppa Pig, Sesame Street, and Dr. Seuss, all carefully curated for children aged eight and under. This app is included with a standard Netflix membership and can be downloaded as a separate entity from app stores. Notably, it doesn't include in-app purchases, fees, or ads, and allows for offline gameplay. Initially available in several countries including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, the Philippines, and New Zealand, the app is set for a global rollout on April 28, 2026. Netflix's gaming division has been focused on four core areas: mainstream games, narrative-driven games, party games, and kids' games. According to Lisa Burgess, Netflix's General Manager for Kids' Games, the platform's primary goal for kids' games is engagement rather than revenue. Burgess emphasized that many kids' games are designed with paywalls in mind, but Netflix is taking a different approach by prioritizing the development of fun and engaging games. In terms of intellectual property, Netflix is keen on recognizable IPs that can span multiple categories. Burgess highlighted the unique connection between kids and the IPs they engage with, noting that when kids enjoy a particular IP, they often want to watch and play content related to it. Currently, Netflix's kids' games are primarily aimed at preschoolers, but the company plans to expand its offerings to cater to older children, aged six to eight, in the future.
