UK Game Development Remains Strong with PC and Console Gaming

Recent findings from the trade association TIGA indicate a significant focus on PC game development among UK studios, with a corresponding decrease in emphasis on mobile platforms. Figures exclusively shared with GamesIndustry.biz reveal that 46% of studios identify PC as their primary platform, with 56% of new startups also concentrating on PC development between May 2024 and September 2025. The proportion of studios engaged in mobile game development dropped from 33% to 31.6%, with their share of total industry jobs also decreasing from 19% to 17.9%. Meanwhile, console games now account for a larger share of industry jobs, increasing from 47.2% to 50% during the survey period, despite a 2.1% decline in headcount at console-focused studios. This shift underscores the resilience of the UK game development sector, with PC and console development driving its strength. According to TIGA CEO Richard Wilson, "The UK games development sector's resilience is underpinned by the continued growth of PC and console development." The findings highlight the importance of maintaining a supportive policy environment to foster investment, growth, and job creation in the UK games industry, particularly during its current downturn. The UK development sector is experiencing its most severe decline on record, with a net loss of 1,537 development jobs between May 2024 and September 2025, representing a 4.5% annualized fall. Wilson warns that without decisive policy intervention, the UK risks losing thousands of highly skilled jobs to international competitors.
