UK Government Rolls Out £30 Million Games Growth Initiative
The UK government has initiated the latest stage of its Games Growth Package, designating £28.5 million to the UK Games Fund to foster the growth of early-stage developers and studios. Additionally, £1.5 million has been pledged to the London Games Festival over the next three years, totaling £30 million in investment. The funding is categorized into three tracks: the Entry track, which provides grants of up to £20,000 for newly established studios with limited history; the Emergent track, offering up to £100,000 for prototyping new games; and the Expansion track, which provides up to £250,000 to support project completion and studio expansion. A further £20 million has been allocated to the Tay Cities region to support local talent and advance technologies such as gaming and virtual reality. According to UKIE chief Nick Poole, 'The Government's Games Growth Package is a significant endorsement of the UK games industry.' Michael French, Head of Games London and London Games Festival director, added: 'This investment will help promote London and the UK as a hub for video games, attracting global investors and decision-makers. We anticipate this will lead to increased growth, higher international profiles for UK games businesses, and greater investment opportunities nationwide.' Recent data from TIGA reveals that PC and console development remain key drivers of the UK games industry, with 46% of studios focusing on PC development and console games accounting for a larger share of sector jobs.
