Over Half of PC Gaming Revenue Generated by Titles Outside the Top 20
Newzoo's data reveals that games outside the Top 20 are increasingly capturing a larger share of revenue and playtime in Western markets. The company's annual PC & Console Gaming Report further indicates that titles beyond the Top 20 are gaining commercial significance across all major platforms. Between 2022 and 2025, the revenue share of PC games outside the Top 20 grew from 48% to 56%, with playtime increasing from 33% to 45%, driven by premium and back-catalogue titles in key markets such as the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. According to Newzoo market analysis manager Tianyi Gu, "The space below the Top 20 is becoming more economically meaningful, making games below the very top more commercially relevant than before, although the market remains concentrated." The data shows a decline in the dominance of shooters, while action RPGs and survival games experienced strong growth, with notable performances from titles like Path of Exile 2, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, as well as back-catalogue titles such as Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring, and Skyrim. Rust, Day Z, Dead by Daylight, and Red Dead Redemption 2 continue to engage players in the adventure genre, along with R.E.P.O., which launched last year. In contrast, console spending remains concentrated on major franchises, with the bulk of spending directed toward titles in the Top 20. On PlayStation, lower-ranked titles accounted for 38% of total revenue in 2025, up from 33% in 2022, with a 32% increase in playtime over the same period. First-party action-adventure titles such as God of War Ragnarök, Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, and The Last of Us Part 2 contribute significantly to playtime, while adventure and RPG genres dominate the platform. On Xbox, playtime for games not in the Top 20 grew by 12%, although these titles accounted for only 35% of revenue in 2025, suggesting that Game Pass subscriptions drive playtime. RPG and adventure games are also popular on Xbox, with Newzoo noting that Game Pass enables more titles to "secure visibility and trial than they might otherwise."
