PS5 Sales Experience a Surge as Consumers Rush to Avoid Global Price Increases
There was a notable spike in weekly unit and dollar sales of PlayStation 5 consoles in the US, occurring ahead of Sony's announcement regarding global price increases for its PS5 consoles, which the company attributed to ongoing global economic pressures. In late March, Sony revealed that the base and digital PS5 models would see a price increase of $100, while the PS5 Pro would rise by $150, starting from April 2. This decision was described as necessary to maintain the delivery of high-quality gaming experiences globally, according to Isabelle Tomatis, vice president of SIE. Mat Piscatella, director at Circana and a video game industry advisor, observed that US spending on video game hardware nearly doubled compared to the same week in the previous year, as gamers sought to upgrade before the price increase took effect. In its financial report for the nine months ending December 31, 2025, Sony reported a 21% increase in operating income, with its Game & Network Services segment seeing a 27% rise to ¥409.1 billion ($2.6 billion). However, the company experienced a decline in hardware revenue, with PlayStation 5 unit sales dropping by 15.7%. This price adjustment follows a similar increase last April in Europe, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. Recent reports have suggested that Sony may be considering a delay in the launch of its next-generation console due to the ongoing memory shortage crisis.
