Xbox Chief Creative Officer Unveils Unified Strategy for Next-Generation Project Helix Console

As Xbox develops its next-generation console, the company's first-party studios will work closely with its hardware team. In a recent episode of the Official Xbox Podcast, CCO Matt Booty discussed the company's integrated approach to Project Helix, highlighting the early involvement of publishing and development teams. According to Booty, "What sets us apart from other major publishers is that our publishing and game development organization is side-by-side with the hardware team within the same organization." He emphasized that the teams are involved from the outset in planning, visioning, and spec discussions, and will continue to collaborate as the console develops. With 30 internal studios under its umbrella, including Xbox Game Studios, Bethesda Softworks, and Activision Blizzard, Xbox fosters a culture of collaboration across teams. For example, Blizzard Cinematics is assisting Playground Games with the upcoming Fable reboot, while Rare is supporting Double Fine on its pottery game, Kiln. Booty explained that his role is to provide enough connection and structure to facilitate communication and knowledge-sharing between studios without imposing a uniform culture. Additionally, Xbox VP of Next Generation Jason Ronald shared details about Project Helix at the GDC Festival of Gaming, stating that it will deliver high performance and a player-centric experience, backed by a multi-year agreement with AMD. Ronald noted that traditional rendering techniques have reached their limits, and the development of new technology is necessary to advance the state of the art. Alpha versions of the console are expected to be available starting in 2027.
