BAFTA Makes Last-Minute Decision to Pull Indie Game Trailer from 2026 Awards Ceremony

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has cited a 'compliance decision' as the reason for removing an independent game trailer from the 2026 BAFTA Games Awards. In a LinkedIn post, developer Alyx Jones discussed the incident, stating that they received a phone call informing them that the trailer for their game, The Quiet Things, had been pulled while en route to the nominees' party. The game, an autobiographical narrative adventure based on the developer's personal diaries, tackles sensitive themes such as self-harm, suicide, and childhood abuse, as noted on its Steam store page. Jones expressed their disappointment, having worked tirelessly to create the trailer despite being burned out, in the hopes that it would be seen by a large audience. According to Jones, BAFTA decided not to show the trailer due to insufficient time to include trigger warnings, and their suggestions for further changes were allegedly ignored. Jones expressed frustration, stating that this experience is not an isolated incident and that they have faced repeated setbacks due to the sensitive nature of their game's subject matter. In response to press inquiries, BAFTA stated that the trailer was not shown due to its potential to trigger certain themes, prioritizing the wellbeing of their guests. The organization emphasized its support for games that address difficult topics, clarifying that the decision was made with the specific event in mind. Other notable winners at the 2026 BAFTA Games Awards included Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Dispatch, each taking home three awards.
