March 2026 Sees 69% Surge in US Hardware Sales, Fueled by Strong Nintendo Switch 2 Performance

In March 2026, the US video game market witnessed a significant 12% increase in consumer spending, reaching $5.3 billion, while the first quarter saw a 5% year-over-year rise to $14.6 billion. The primary driver behind this growth was the substantial 69% surge in hardware sales, which reached $500 million, largely attributed to the impressive performance of the Nintendo Switch 2. According to Circana's data, the Switch 2 dominated both unit and dollar sales in March and year-to-date 2026, followed closely by the PlayStation 5, which saw a modest 3% year-over-year sales increase. Notably, the Switch 2 has outperformed the original Switch by 12% in its first 10 months, cementing its position as the fastest-selling hardware platform in Circana's records since 1995. The video game content spending also saw an 8% increase to $4.5 billion, with console content experiencing a 22% growth, driven primarily by a 40% rise in digital premium downloads and new releases such as Crimson Desert, MLB The Show 26, and Pokémon Pokopia. Pokémon Pokopia topped the Nintendo platform chart, followed by Pokémon Legends: Z-A in second place, while Pokémon Legends: Z-A ranked 18th on Circana's overall Top 20 list. Resident Evil: Requiem has entered the top five best-selling Resident Evil titles in terms of US dollar sales after just two months, trailing only Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil 4 (2023), Resident Evil: Village, and the original Resident Evil 4. On the mobile front, Monopoly Go maintained its top spot despite experiencing a revenue decline of over 10% quarter-over-quarter.
