Meta Announces 10% Workforce Reduction, Impacting 8,000 Staff Members

As Meta continues to reallocate resources towards artificial intelligence investments, the company is implementing additional workforce reductions. According to a memo, around 10% of Meta's employees, totaling 8,000 staff members, will be affected by these cuts. The specific divisions impacted have not been revealed. A company spokesperson has confirmed the layoffs but declined to provide further details. Employees were initially informed on April 23, with official notifications to be sent out next month. Additionally, Meta will be closing approximately 6,000 open job positions. In a statement, Meta's chief people officer, Janelle Gale, expressed that the decision was made to ensure the company's efficient operation and to offset other investments. This move follows previous layoffs in March, which affected 700 positions across various divisions, including the Reality Labs VR unit. Earlier this year, Meta reduced its Reality Labs workforce by 10%, resulting in the closure of three VR studios.
