Sony Clarifies PS4 and PS5 Digital Game Licensing Policy

Sony has provided an update on its digital rights management (DRM) policy for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, stating that a one-time license check is required for newly purchased digital games. According to a Sony spokesperson, 'After the initial check, players can enjoy their games without any further verification.' This clarification comes after reports of a 30-day timer on the consoles, which had raised concerns among users about potential loss of access to their digital games if their console remained offline or if Sony's servers became unavailable. Investigations revealed that an online check within 15 days of purchase converts the limited license to a permanent one, potentially addressing issues related to the 14-day refund window. While some concerns, such as the impact of a dead CMOS battery on license validation, still exist, Sony has made efforts to address these issues on its modern consoles. The controversy surrounding Sony's one-time DRM check bears similarities to the backlash Microsoft faced in 2013 over its original Xbox One policy, which required a constant internet connection for stricter DRM enforcement. Microsoft eventually removed this requirement due to public pressure and also lifted restrictions on sharing physical games.
