Xbox Introduces Ad-Supported Game Streaming Trials
Microsoft is piloting ad-supported game streaming on Xbox, offering Xbox Insider Program participants the option to play one-hour sessions at no cost, with ads providing the necessary support. These advertisements will be displayed prior to each gaming session, without altering the core gameplay experience. Participation in this trial is voluntary, and users have the freedom to opt for alternative playing methods at any time. According to Xbox, the inclusion of ads is intended to 'add value' and maintain the same level of quality as the platform's content. The primary goal of this trial is to provide more affordable gaming options for a wider audience, using devices they already possess. Xbox acknowledges that advertising has been a part of the gaming industry for decades, ranging from in-game product placements to free-to-play models. However, the company emphasizes that when executed effectively, advertising can make gaming more accessible by reducing the initial cost. This, in turn, enables players to access games without having to make an upfront purchase for streaming, thereby expanding the audience through innovative playing methods. In 2022, there were reports suggesting Xbox was exploring the possibility of incorporating in-game ads for free-to-play titles on its cloud streaming service. The following year, Tim Stuart, the former CFO of Xbox, hinted that this initiative might be targeted towards countries where streaming is more prevalent, such as Africa, India, and Southeast Asia, by offering users the option to watch a short ad in exchange for extended gaming sessions.
