Xbox Unveils Backwards Compatibility for PCs and Handheld Devices

Microsoft's Xbox division is rolling out a new backwards compatibility program, enabling PC and handheld device users to play classic Xbox titles. The initial lineup features four games: BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy. These games can be purchased on PC or accessed via Game Pass, with existing console digital licenses transferring seamlessly to PC and handheld devices. According to Jason Ronald, VP of next-generation gaming, this move marks the beginning of a larger effort to preserve and re-release classic Xbox games on PC. To enhance the gaming experience, Xbox has incorporated various features for PC players, including 4x resolution, VSync support, fullscreen and windowed modes, anisotropic filtering, and improved anti-aliasing. Additionally, Achievements for these games are slated to be introduced in the coming months. This backwards compatibility initiative is part of Xbox's broader strategic shift, emphasizing platform exclusivity and a commitment to delivering a consistent stream of exclusive titles. As outlined by chief strategy officer Matthew Ball, the goal is to drive consistent growth by focusing on exclusive games that provide a clear reason for players to choose Xbox consoles, and to continually earn that investment post-purchase.
