US Video Game Sales Decline 20% Year-Over-Year Despite Xbox Console Sales Surge
The US video game market has experienced a significant decline in sales, with total revenue dropping from $5.7 billion to $4.5 billion between June 2025 and June 2026, representing a year-on-year decrease of 21%. According to Circana data, all segments have been affected, with hardware sales plummeting 62% to $383 million, software sales decreasing 12%, and accessories declining 21%. The substantial drop in hardware sales can be attributed to the release of the Switch 2 last June, resulting in a 79% decrease in Nintendo hardware spending compared to its launch month in 2025. In contrast, Xbox Series sales have more than doubled, while PlayStation 5 spending has decreased 19% year-on-year. On a year-to-date basis, total sales across hardware and software have remained relatively flat, with a 1% decline. The best-selling video game chart for June has been topped by EA's UFC 6, followed by the indie game Meccha Chameleon, and 007 First Light, which has dropped to third place after leading in May.
