Xbox Addresses Recent Outage, Vows to Improve After Disruption to Gaming Services
Xbox has issued a statement explaining the cause of a recent outage that left players unable to access their games or sign in to their accounts. According to CTO Scott Van Vliet, the issue stemmed from a failure in an internal Microsoft licensing service shared across multiple products. This failure led to problems with sign-in scenarios and entitlement checks, affecting not only gamers but also publishing and store partners. The service was restored unevenly across regions after the failing infrastructure was isolated and traffic was redirected. Van Vliet assured that a full-post incident review is underway to identify the root cause of the issue, understand why recovery took so long, and implement changes to prevent similar disruptions in the future. This includes strengthening dependencies, improving failure detection and containment, and enhancing communication with players during outages. The incident follows a recent outage experienced by PlayStation due to connectivity issues on Amazon Web Services servers, which resulted in players losing access to their digital game libraries during the open beta of Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls.
