Double Fine Productions Lays Off 23 Employees Following Independence from Xbox

Double Fine Productions has undergone a significant restructuring, resulting in the loss of 23 jobs, which accounts for 25% of its workforce. This move comes after the studio gained full independence from Xbox earlier in the week. In a statement released on social media, Tim Schafer, the founder and CEO of Double Fine Productions, announced the layoffs, stating that the decision was necessary for the studio to achieve a sustainable size. Schafer expressed that the affected employees were valuable members of the team and would be deeply missed. He also assured that the company is committed to providing support to those who have been let go. An Xbox spokesperson wished the studio well in its new chapter as an independent entity, expressing enthusiasm for their future projects. The separation of Double Fine from Xbox follows Microsoft's acquisition of the studio in 2019 for $13.2 million. During its time under Xbox Game Studios, Double Fine developed notable games such as Psychonauts 2, Keeper, and Kiln. The studio is one of several that have been impacted by significant cuts at Xbox, with a total of 3,200 positions being eliminated across Xbox Game Studios.
