Resident Evil Remakes Fueling Financial Growth for New Games and IPs at Capcom
According to Capcom producer Masachika Kawata, the company's remake strategy for classic Resident Evil games is yielding significant financial gains, which in turn support the development of new titles and intellectual properties. Kawata emphasized that this approach not only generates revenue but also allows the development team to refine their skills and push their creative boundaries. By remaking older games, Capcom can maintain a steady release schedule for the Resident Evil series, which would be challenging if they were to produce entirely new games annually. Kawata stressed that remakes are just as crucial as new titles in the series, as they contribute to a cycle that provides the necessary financial resources for creating new Resident Evil entries and original IPs like Pragmata. Capcom's financial reports have attributed the success of Resident Evil Requiem as a major driver of revenue growth, with the remake strategy over the past decade resulting in the release of three remakes, including the 2023 release of Resident Evil 4. The upcoming remake of Resident Evil Veronica is slated for release next year. Data from analysts suggests that anticipation for new Resident Evil games boosts sales and engagement with earlier titles in the series. While there may be interest in spin-off titles, Kawata noted that the team is currently focused on pouring their energy into new entries and remakes, leaving little capacity for spin-off projects at present.
