GTA 6 Download Codes in Japan to Have Limited Validity

In Japan, download codes for Grand Theft Auto 6 will become invalid as of May 8, 2027. This is due to regional regulations, specifically the Payment Services Act enforced by the Financial Services Agency of Japan, which requires sellers of digital codes to set aside funds in the event a company goes out of business. However, this rule does not apply to products with an expiration date of less than six months. The news comes after Rockstar announced that physical copies of GTA 6 would include a download code instead of a game disc, a move that precedes Sony's decision to end production of physical discs for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028, citing a shift in consumer preferences towards digital formats. Sony later assured developers and publishers that they can reorder existing PlayStation discs after the cutoff date. Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser has weighed in on the physical versus digital debate, stating that companies should offer what consumers want, and noting the benefits of digital releases in terms of updating and fixing game issues.
