Pokémon Go Celebrates 10th Anniversary with Record-Breaking $48.5m Revenue

During its 10th anniversary celebrations, Pokémon Go achieved a significant milestone, generating over $48.5 million in in-app purchase revenue, according to data from AppMagic. This substantial increase occurred during the Road to Legends event, which took place from July 6 to July 12 and featured rotating raids of legendary Pokémon, Ultra Beasts, and Mega-Evolved Pokémon, as well as signature move unlocks and special backgrounds leading up to Pokémon Go Fest: Global. As a result, the game's in-app purchase revenue was 5.9 times higher than the previous week, setting a new record. Pokémon Go ranked fourth among the world's highest-grossing apps during the same week. Over the past 30 days, the game has generated $98.1 million in revenue and received over four million downloads, with the US accounting for 37% of revenue, followed by Japan at 27%. India contributed 22% of downloads, while the US accounted for 14%. In July, Pokémon Go was the seventh highest-grossing app globally, surpassing Roblox. According to Matthew Reynolds, editor of One More Catch, 'The 10th anniversary week was a huge draw due to the return of legendary Pokémon to raids and the optional £20/$20 battle pass, which offered a rare and powerful item.' Reynolds added that Pokémon Go has successfully maintained an accessible core loop for free players while introducing major features annually since its debut. With over 700 million downloads and $6.4 billion in revenue since its launch in 2016, Pokémon Go continues to thrive. Following Scopely's acquisition of Niantic, Scopely's president of games, Ed Wu, and head of M&A operations, Heather Tacskovics, discussed the game's future, emphasizing that a sequel is not planned, as it would divide the community. Instead, Wu envisions introducing new concepts that inspire people to explore the world together, while maintaining the game's core appeal.
