Why Creator Engagement is a Stronger Indicator of a Game's Success than Viewership
A recent analysis by the marketing platform Gamesight reveals that the number of active creators and streamers following a game's launch is a more accurate predictor of its long-term success on Twitch than the total viewing hours. The study, which examined 25 game launches including both new releases and established franchises, found that the number of creators producing content around a game by its third day is a reliable indicator of its future performance. Specifically, Gamesight discovered that player-versus-player first-person shooter games exhibit the highest level of retention among shooter subgenres, with factors such as replay value, match variability, and competitive progression contributing to this phenomenon. The platform categorized the launches into three groups based on retention rates: high, stable, and low. Notably, the number of active creators by day three accurately predicted the retention category for 72% of the games, increasing to 82% by the end of the launch month. According to Gamesight data analyst Marlie Tandoc, the ongoing engagement of a diverse group of creators is a stronger signal of community formation than short-term viewing metrics. Tandoc emphasized the importance of sustained creator programs and post-launch community investment in driving long-term success, stating that while initial launch hype can generate visibility, the curve of active creator engagement is a more reliable indicator of a game's enduring appeal.
