Lightspeed LA, Developer of Last Sentinel, Announces Staff Reductions
Tencent's Lightspeed LA has implemented a restructuring plan, resulting in the elimination of 80 positions, as it adjusts the development trajectory of its debut game, Last Sentinel. According to a report by Bloomberg, this move is a direct consequence of the company's revised creative vision. The developer has confirmed that the decision to downsize was necessitated by changes in the game's development direction, emphasizing that the studio remains operational and committed to game development. Lightspeed LA has expressed its commitment to treating affected employees with dignity and respect, providing comprehensive support and exploring opportunities for internal transfers where possible. The company has reaffirmed its long-term dedication to the North American market, underscoring its intention to continue investing in local talent and development expertise. Established in 2020 under the leadership of industry veteran Steve Martin, Lightspeed LA is the US-based subsidiary of Lightspeed Studios, headquartered in Shenzhen. Last Sentinel, announced at The Game Awards in 2023, has been in production for six years, with sources indicating that the game has experienced multiple delays and has a budget exceeding hundreds of millions of dollars. While reports suggest that Tencent has decided not to proceed with the project, Lightspeed LA has stated that it will provide development updates for the game in due course, clarifying that no release date has been announced at this time.
