Square Enix Sees Significant Q1 Profit Increase Following Release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on Multiple Platforms

Square Enix has announced a notable rise in its first-quarter profits, with a 175.5% increase to ¥13.2 billion ($82.9 million), driven by the success of its Digital Entertainment segment. Key contributors to this growth include the HD Games, MMO, and Smart Devices/PC Browser sub-segments. Financial highlights include: - Net sales of ¥78.4 billion ($492.3 million), representing a 32.3% increase - Operating income of ¥17 billion ($106.7 million), up 88.6% - Profit of ¥13.2 billion ($82.9 million), marking a 175.7% increase - Digital Entertainment net sales of ¥49.9 billion ($313.3 million), a 51.8% rise The Digital Entertainment segment saw operating income increase by 91.8% to ¥15.5 billion ($97.3 million), primarily due to the strong performance of HD Games. In this sub-segment, net sales rose by 98.8% to ¥17.7 billion ($111.1 million), up from ¥8.9 billion ($5.8 million) in the same period last year. Operating income for this sub-segment surged 510% to ¥6.1 billion ($38.2 million), compared to ¥1.0 billion ($6.2 million) in the prior year period. The successful launch of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and the Microsoft Store was a key driver of this growth. The game initially launched on PlayStation 5 in February 2024 and Windows in January 2025. Additional titles, such as The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales, also contributed to the increase in sales, alongside a rise in catalog title sales. Other notable releases during the quarter include Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler 2 for Switch 2, Star Ocean: The Second Story A on Switch 2, and Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster. In the MMO Game sub-segment, net sales increased by 32.2% to ¥12.7 billion ($79.7 million), while operating income remained relatively steady at ¥3.6 billion ($22.6 million). According to Square Enix, these numbers reflect "improved user activity" following the announcement of an expansion pack for Final Fantasy 14. The company noted that profits "increased slightly due to the advance recognition of expenses related to its planned release in early 2027." For Games for Smart Devices/PC Browser, net sales rose by 35.6% to ¥19.4 billion ($121.8 million), while operating income increased by 72.7% to ¥5.7 billion ($35.7 million), supported by the success of Dissidia Duelum Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest Smash/Grow. A total of 7.38 million units were sold during the first quarter, marking an increase from 4.01 million units last year. Physical sales accounted for 0.73 million units, while downloads reached 6.65 million units. Looking ahead, Square Enix has maintained its consolidated full-year forecast for the fiscal year, as announced on May 14, 2026.
